EXTRA: Bruno Mars’ Album Review by Drone
See now, when Bruno Mars’ debut album came out I was so inspired by his musicianship and superior vocal talent that I did a song by song review of his album. Here are my detailed thoughts:
"Doo-Wops and Hooligans"
The first lines of the opening track are 'easy come, easy go' but that can not be the case for the talented Bruno Mars, after listening to this album you can tell Bruno Mars is certainly the most mature and vocally talented male Pop artist today, at times very comparable to Ne-Yo with the sophistication of the lyrics and vocal styling.
The standouts for me are 'just the way you are', 'grenade', 'talking to the moon' and 'liquor store blues'
Track by Track analysis:
1. Grenade- This song is very catchy and should be released as a single, Speaking of a man who would do anything for one who he loves but she wouldn't return the favor. The smoking gun was her eyes being open during their first kiss but she was lying when she said she loved him. The lyrics are very intriguing and are very unusual hence sincere and pure. 10/10
2. Just the way you are- This is of course his 1st single from the album, an excellent choice with superlative vocals that got me to listen to the rest of his album. This is the kind of song that would make the toughest girl weak and those who gave up on love would be revived. The lyrics are simple and accompany the melody so well; one would understand why it topped the Billboard singles chart for four consecutive weeks. 10/10
3. Our first time- As the title implies, it’s about first time sex with a lover and going with flow and being slow. A subject I usually find annoying in songs but nevertheless his voice makes up for it going from soft in the choruses to going fuller in the verses, completed with a reggae inspired beat, this track showcases his versatility. 7/10
4. Runaway Baby- The only up-tempo song in the album, it makes for a good listen. He sings 'runaway baby before I put my spell on u'. The song is definitely a good breather in-between the deep music and is playful, very well placed in the album. 7/10
5. The Lazy Song- This song is one that I'll play on Sundays and those lazy days. It's definitely pleasing to the ear almost acoustic with simply structured guitar, drums and bass. A definite plus! 8/10
6. Marry you- Going back to singing at the top of his vocal range, him wanting to marry a girl almost carelessly as if he is in Vegas. But he does say he was looking for something dumb to do. 7/10
7. Talking to the moon- One of the standouts in the album, and one of my favorites. Neighbors think he is crazy because he is alone talking to the moon; the chorus definitely sticks in your mind. His impressive vocal range shines through hitting very high full voice notes, that certainly further complements the songs. 10/10
8. Liquor store blues- Very carefree side of himself and explaining how that’s only today and he'll be more put together tomorrow. With very relatable lyrics and reggae vibe further extended by featuring Damian Marley, this is a sure winner. 9/10
9. Count on Me- Very stripped down relaxed song with his voice taking center stage and it carries the song and the listener. This one is about friendship and is a smooth jam with soft strings, guitar and bass. 8/10
10. The other side- vocals beginning very relaxed and go bigger and bigger hitting some interesting notes in the chorus, while you are attending to that, Cee-Lo comes in with his pleasant, mature voice and his typical sound takes you through to the chorus employing his falsetto tricks then B.o.B shows up all of a sudden moving from a relaxed rap then his tempo goes up eventually and Bruno then takes to the chorus again. If you have never had sex before, this track feels just like it funny enough. 10/10
